Do not keep forcing the lock
If part of the key is stuck inside the lock, forcing another key or pushing tools into the cylinder can make the problem worse. It may push the broken piece deeper, damage the pins, or make extraction harder.
If the door is secure and you are not locked out, the safest approach is usually to stop using the lock and arrange a proper repair or replacement.
- Do not force another key into the lock
- Do not push the broken piece deeper
- Avoid using glue inside the cylinder
- Stop if the lock feels jammed
Why keys snap
Keys often snap because they are worn, bent or being used in a stiff lock. If the lock has been difficult for a while, the broken key may be a symptom of a bigger issue. The cylinder may be worn, the door may be misaligned, or the uPVC mechanism may be putting strain on the key.
This is why it is worth asking not only how to remove the key, but why it snapped in the first place.
- Worn or weakened key
- Stiff cylinder
- Misaligned uPVC door
- Forcing the key
- Old or damaged lock
Door open or door closed?
If the door is open, the repair is often more straightforward because the lock can be accessed more easily. If the door is closed and locked, the situation may be more urgent and could require specialist opening or replacement work.
Either way, the goal is to regain access or restore secure locking without causing unnecessary damage.
- Door open: easier to inspect and replace parts
- Door closed: may need specialist access
- Stiff mechanism: may need adjustment as well as lock work
- Lost confidence in the lock: consider replacement
Should the lock be changed afterwards?
Sometimes a broken key can be removed and the lock can continue working. But if the lock was stiff, worn or unreliable, replacement may be the better long-term option. If keys have been lost, shared or copied, changing the lock can also restore key control.
Brodley Locksmiths can advise whether extraction, repair, lock change or upgrade is most sensible.
- Replace worn cylinders
- Upgrade weak locks where appropriate
- Check door alignment
- Restore key control if keys are lost or copied
