The lock may not be the main problem
Many people assume that a hard-to-lock uPVC door needs a new lock. Sometimes it does, but very often the real issue is door alignment. If the door has dropped slightly, the locking points no longer line up cleanly with the keeps in the frame. The handle then needs extra force to lift or engage the mechanism.
This is why replacing only the cylinder does not always solve the problem. A proper repair starts by checking the whole door: hinges, handles, keeps, gearbox, locking strip, frame and how the door sits when closed.
- Dropped hinges
- Misaligned keeps
- Worn handles
- Failing gearbox
- Multipoint mechanism strain
Signs your uPVC door needs attention
A uPVC door will often give warning signs before it fails completely. The handle may become stiff, the door may catch at the top or bottom, or the key may be difficult to turn. If you find yourself lifting the door, pushing the door hard, or pulling it towards you before it locks, there is likely an alignment or mechanism issue.
The sooner it is checked, the better. Small adjustments or targeted repairs can sometimes prevent a larger failure.
- The handle is stiff or grinding
- The door needs lifting to lock
- The key turns only when pressure is applied
- The locking points scrape or clunk
- The door has suddenly become harder to close
Why forcing the handle can make it worse
When the locking points do not line up, forcing the handle puts strain on the internal gearbox and multipoint mechanism. Over time, that strain can cause the mechanism to break. If the mechanism fails while the door is closed, the repair can become more awkward and urgent.
If the handle is becoming noticeably stiff, it is better to stop forcing it and arrange a door check. Brodley Locksmiths can assess whether the door needs adjustment, a replacement part, or a full uPVC door mechanism replacement.
- Forcing the handle can damage the gearbox
- A failing mechanism can jam shut
- Early adjustment can prevent bigger repairs
- Mechanism replacement may be needed if parts are worn
Coastal weather and Tendring properties
Properties near the coast can experience more movement, corrosion and wear around doors and hardware. In areas such as Clacton-on-Sea, Holland-on-Sea, Walton-on-the-Naze, Frinton-on-Sea, Harwich, Dovercourt, Jaywick, St Osyth and Point Clear, locks and door mechanisms can be affected by salt air, damp conditions and regular seasonal use.
This does not mean every door needs major work. It does mean regular checks and timely adjustments are worthwhile, especially for holiday lets, guest houses, caravan sites and rental properties where doors are used by different people throughout the year.
- Coastal air can affect hardware
- Seasonal movement can alter alignment
- Holiday properties often have heavy door use
- Regular checks can reduce breakdowns
Repair, adjust or replace?
The right repair depends on the cause. Some doors need adjustment. Some need keeps repositioned, handles replaced or a worn gearbox changed. Others need a full multipoint locking mechanism replacement. A good locksmith should not jump straight to replacing parts without checking the door properly first.
Brodley Locksmiths looks at the door as a complete system and explains the practical options before work begins.
- Door adjustment
- Handle and keep checks
- Gearbox repair or replacement
- Full multipoint mechanism replacement
- Cylinder upgrades where appropriate
