How a multipoint mechanism works
A multipoint locking mechanism usually includes a central gearbox connected to a long locking strip. When you lift the handle, hooks, rollers, bolts or mushrooms move into keeps on the frame. The key then locks the mechanism in place.
Because several parts move together, alignment is very important. If the door drops or the keeps are out of line, the mechanism has to work harder every time the door is locked.
- Central gearbox
- Long locking strip
- Hooks, rollers or bolts
- Frame keeps
- Cylinder and handles
Why multipoint locks fail
The most common reason is long-term strain. If a door has been misaligned for months or years, the gearbox and locking points may wear out. Handles can become stiff, keys can become difficult to turn, and eventually the mechanism may fail.
Coastal weather, heavy use, older parts and lack of adjustment can all contribute, especially in busy homes, rental properties and holiday lets.
- Door misalignment
- Dropped hinges
- Worn gearbox
- Damaged locking strip
- Forcing the handle
- Coastal wear and corrosion
Signs you may need repair or replacement
If the door is becoming harder to lock, the handle feels floppy or stiff, or the locking points do not engage properly, the mechanism should be checked. Sometimes adjustment is enough. Other times the gearbox or full mechanism needs replacing.
Leaving the issue too long can lead to a jammed door, which is more stressful and can be more difficult to resolve.
- Stiff or floppy handle
- Key will not turn smoothly
- Door needs lifting
- Locking points do not engage
- Mechanism makes grinding sounds
- Door will not lock or unlock reliably
Can the whole door be saved?
In many cases, yes. A failed multipoint mechanism does not automatically mean you need a new door. A locksmith can often replace the gearbox or mechanism and adjust the door so it locks smoothly again.
Brodley Locksmiths will advise whether repair, adjustment or replacement is the best option based on the condition of the door and parts available.
- Door adjustment may solve minor issues
- Gearbox replacement can fix some failures
- Full mechanism replacement may be needed
- A new door is not always necessary
